What if I won the lottery? Not very likely, since I rarely buy a ticket. But if I did, and I won the big one, the jackpot, then I know exactly what I would do with it. I would use the money to make sure that my life would perpetually consist of autumn and winter. Britain's autumn and winter are pleasant enough and I would stay in this part of the world for that. Then as soon as the temperature started to rise, I would be on a 'plane and bound for the south island of New Zealand. I would go as far south as possible without turning into a penguin. Anywhere, where from may to september, there are long, dark nights, freezing rain and icy wind. That is my idea of heaven!

I know that I am what anyone would call a big girl, but that is not the only reason why I hate summer so much. I get migraines, prickly heat, hives, nausea, and ahem, other unpleasantness. The headaches are the worst. Just an hour in the sun can be enough to start it off as my eyes as rather sensitive to light. You have no idea how miserable it can be to have to endure it all while trying to enjoy a nice summer outing. On the hottest day, I close my eyes and I can see it: almost feel it. A little house right on the south coast of the South Island. What about Stewart Island? There's a place there called Oban which might do very well, or Port Pegasus, which is even further south. Aha, but I managed to find an atlas and I discovered that the Falkland Islands are even closer to the Antarctic, so perhaps I should go there instead.

Now, where was I? Oh, yes: ice and snow, long dark nights and cold wind and rain. Now that is, as I said, my idea of heaven. No migraines and no nausea, no more miserable hot days. It's all I can think of in the middle of summer. Thinking of how I would spend the rest of my life in perpetual cold. Now, I'm off to buy a lottery ticket. You never know!
